Review: Aladdin at the Broadway Theatre

Published Date: 11 December 2008

YOU certainly get your money's worth at the Broadway pantomime production of Aladdin.

The three-hour long magical musical tour through the enchanting tale of the young street urchin's battle to cement his love for Princess Jasmine leaves no stone unturned.

A well balanced mix of song, storyline and silliness makes this panto one that everyone will enjoy.

Children will be entertained by the bumbling buffoonery of the Princess's two body guards Abu and Hakim. They will also revel in Postman Pat's three appearances on stage.

Older people will love the choice of songs and slick dance routines throughout the show, but most of all the devilishly devious performance by Brian Capron as Abanazar.

Every second he's on stage is a joy to watch. The song and dance scene with his wicked friends is the highlight of show.

Faye Tozer is the best singer of the bunch, and she will win lots more male admirers with her flirty performance.

Ray Quinn is a ball of energy as Aladdin, and when he appears with his chest on show, you may wonder if Widow Twanky used his washboard stomach to iron her lavish outfits.

The backing ensemble of West End dancers and actors are professional to the core, but the version of The Promise by Girls Aloud drags a little.

Computer technology is used to bring the genie to life, and both Aladdin and the genie sample the high life during a flying scene.

It may lack a little on audience participation to merit being a three-hour pantomime, but the chance for some lucky youngsters to go up on stage and say hello to Postman Pat makes up for it in the finale.

Overall, it's a very refreshing take on the pantomime theme. The weeks and weeks of rehearsals are clear for all to see.

Reader review: Lisa and family loved Aladdin at Broadway

Published Date: 12 December 2008

By Lisa Moore

NOTHING says "Christmas" more than a good old panto ? and a trip to Aladdin this week kicked off our family festivities nicely.

Starring cheeky former X Factor finalist Ray Quinn, singer Faye Tozer from Steps and ex-Coronation Street star Brian Capron, I was expecting great things.

And I am pleased to say I ? and partner Anthony and our children Olivia (10) and Theo (7) ? were not disappointed.

Right from the start, Ray put on a great performance as Aladdin, especially with his singing, while Brian made for a mean "baddie" Abanazar and Faye a glittering "fairy" (for want of a better description).

A new version of the classic tale, this production had everything you would expect and more.

Of course there was the magic lamp, the talented flying carpet (Matt), the cave and beautiful Princess Jasmine (who had a sparkling singing voice).

And, in true panto style, there was also Aladdin's foolish brother, Mr Wishy, along with a larger-than-life dame, a visit from Postman Pat and a strong supporting cast of singers and dancers.

My children especially enjoyed the many hit songs, from High School Musical numbers, to Abba favourites and a Grease finale.

My favourite moment has to be a line-up of men doing a rendition of Girls Aloud's latest hit, The Promise (complete with sparkly gold dresses and high heels?!). One of the cast knew the moves only a little too well?

My only criticism of the show is that it is slightly too long at three hours ? although the kids weren't complaining.
